The center of this novel takes place in
Dublin, Ireland and its "suburbs," where the main character, Mick, lives at
Mrs. O'Malley's Boarding House. There is a lot of moving in the novel, perhaps
reflecting certain characters' inner lives as much as their outer ones. The
novel takes us on a ride all over Ireland, from Dublin to Cork, from
Glendalough to Killarney to Clifton. Many of the places mentioned and described
are there! |
| It is not quite James Joyces's
Dublin, but Ireland is a wonderful adventure full of history, historic sites,
and beauty. There are two extremes - cosmopolitanism and modern culture - and
the rural country - where many still live as they have for generations. The
country and culture form important backgrounds for Mick, Ethan, and Nina for
which to gain perspectives on their lives and relationships. |
